A Badged S.F. Firefighter Goes Topless In Gay Pride Parade

What are your thoughts about this? If you are a paid firefighter for a city, county or otherwise AND you wear your official badge on your bustier while topless in a parade - should you be disciplined? (For the record, it really doesn't matter what the parade is - the point is about being topless in public while displaying your employers official badge).

We hear out in San Fancisco that an off-duty firefighter was photographed multiple times over riding topless with Dykes on Bikes during their big Gay Pride Parade. Sabine Balden, a 10 year veteran, wore her official badge pinned to a blck and white striped bustier. And just so we are clear, fire department rules state it is against the rules to wear a badge off-duty unless the chief approves. Fire Chief Joane Hayes-White said the situation is under investigation.

Balden said of herself, "I'm perfectly happy to be riding topless in the parade. That's what gay pride is all about." I think the issue is your badge - not your boobs.

Gordon Graham, a retired CHP Officer and now a practicing attorney provides excellent key note addresses on legal issues for firefighters and law enforcement folks. He summed up what it takes to know that you are crossing the boundaries of decency...

What he said was to memorize, "comments, actions or things that a reasonable person would find offensive".

This behavior that was captured on film represents not only the San Francisco Fire Department but all of us. Shame on her. This lapse of appropriate judgement would make me nervous about having her on my engine company. Our job is not a joke and should be held in the highest degree of respect. To not do so ourselves means that the public will loose faith in us and our ability to do our jobs. The publics confidence is based on trust which is earned.

Now look again at the picture and ask yourself, why was she even hired? My vote here would be to take the badge away for good. This is a serious job that demands that only the best get to do the job. Anything less should not be tolerated.

The story has been printed in todays New York Post ... it's become viral. More interesting is that the Post placed the article in their 'Weird But True' section. Here's the link: New York Post

I could careless if she is topless, gay, naked, whatever that's her business. But she step over the boundaries when she added the badge and sign and should be reprimanded for it. I don't think it's worthy of being fired but definately 3 day suspension without pay would be ok.

Excellent point FETC! I should have included that. Putting the department on your motorcycle makes it that much worse. The picture is now all over the Internet.

I think she deserves whatever she has coming from administration. Hold on, before you jump al over the freedom of speech bandwagon. Lets look at the picture for a minute. She could have rode in this parade without any FD connection, but she knew it will be a major attention getter. Right? Did you note, it wasn't just the badge but the sign on the front fender??? Though not an official fire department sign, it does take the entire department's ethics down a notch or two.

I would bet the discipline, will be severe. Especially if they have the policy in regards to displaying or wearing your badge off duty without permission.

That type of display in "Public" is just disrespecting not only herself but the entire Fire Department. Some type of action should be taken to address this issue, but clearly its simply disrespectful.
