Would like to hear from those of you work for departments which still have bells mounted on the apparatus. Under what circumstances does your department sound the apparatus bell?

Yeah, we've had a few guys miss the rig over the years that had to have the chief drive them back to the station. We are 100% volunteer so there are times guys on the rig just want to get back home, if you're too busy talking to someone after the call then they can drive you back!

Johnny, thanks for the response. The "last call, get on the rig or your're walking home," is the most practical use for an apparatus bell I've hear of yet. Makes real good sense. Any of your guys miss the ride back home anyway?

Stelzer, thanks for the response. BTW, that is a fine looking rig in your picture. Would enjoy seeing more photos of that rig if you have them. Stay safe.

We use it after calls, sort of a "last call, get on the rig or you're walking home" type of thing! One or two quick rings lets everyone know it's time to stop b.s'ing and get on the rig.

Our bell is mounted outside our station and the kids like to ring it at birthday parties or open houses... Not fond of them on the Engine, Fed Q works just fine...

Thanks for the response, Corey. In the 50s, and earlier probably, the bell was used to aid the apparatus in returning to station quicker in order to get back in service. I doubt if many civilian drivers would respond to one today, even if it could be heard. I do like the appearance and sound of one, though.

We still have bell mounted on our truck it has gone from engine to engine. It's one of those nostalgia things a tradition. We use it for parades mostly you can't hear it over the sieren. When we do school visits kids love to ring the bell.
