EMMITSBURG, MD -- Hal Bruno retired Thursday as the chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation's board of directors.

Dennis Compton was unanimously selected to replace Bruno, a charter member of the board.

Although he is stepping down as chair, Bruno said he has no intentions to sit back in his recliner.

"I realize that the time has come that I just couldn't attend all the meetings and continue traveling," Bruno said. "I don't want to short change the families of the fallen firefighters or the foundation. It's a sad day for me. But, don't count me out."

Bruno, 79, had thought about stepping down months ago. But, he stayed the course while Congress was discussing the Hometown Heroes Act. "There was no way I was going to let the families down. I wanted to see that the law was enacted the way it was intended."

That's one project that Bruno intends to keep at the top of his agenda. "I also will continue to work with the staff on other projects as well."

The retired newsman said he's not about to give up the mission. "The Everyone Goes Home program is so important. We have to embrace it so one day we can reduce the appalling LODD toll."

Bruno said it's been an honor to come to know the families of the nation's heroes. He has served on the board since 1993.

"I also feel that we are so fortunate to have Compton step in as chairman. The foundation board and staff are the most dedicated people I've known..."

Ron Siarnicki, NFFF executive director, called his tenure with Bruno as "a truly rewarding journey."

He is certain that Bruno will remain a devoted member whose steadfast commitment will be his legacy. "Everyone appreciates his guidance, and we know that he'll stay active. It's been a wonderful experience working with Hal, and that will continue."

"Hal was relentless when it came to the Hometown Heroes Act. He was not going to give up until the families received the benefits they deserve. He was the stick that made that happen."

Siarnicki said Bruno also formed outstanding relationships with other fire service entities and enjoys a special bond with the CFSI staff. Together, they have made a difference for the families of fallen firefighters.

Compton, who has served as vice chair for many years, said he is looking forward to taking over the reigns.

"I'm honored that the board as confidence in me. Hal has done so much for the foundation, and I look forward to working with him for a long time."

Compton also praised the staff for their dedication. "This foundation is in good hands. We have very dedicated, capable people..."

He has served as chair of the executive board of the International Fire Service Training Association and the CFSI's National Advisory Committee.
