Don't scare them with stories! The last thing you want is a blabbering mess on the floor as you tell them about the crispy critters....

Here's my presentation:
1. Ask if any of them have ever had a fire at their house. Let them tell about it if they did.

2. Have a partner dress in full PPE w/SCBA. Explain what each article is and what it does. Then explain that while we look pretty scary, we're there to help them and they should NEVER hide during a fire!

3. Roll out of bed, stay low, feel the door for heat, etc.

4. E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home), advise them to practice getting out with Mom & Dad.

5. Explain what fire alarm pull stations do, and why they should NEVER play with one.

6. Teach them to know their phone # and address when calling 911.

7. Stop, Drop & Roll!

8. NEVER play with matches/lighters!

9. Always wear your seatbelt & teach Mom & Dad to wear their's. Seatbelts save lives!

10. Teach about smoke detectors, when you hear that noise, know what to do.

11. Go over the many causes of fires in the home, encourage them to check the house with Mom or Dad for any hazards.

12. Let them ask questions! you would be surprised what they will come up with. I once had a little Cub Scout ask me what happens if you have to go to the bathroom during a fire!

Hope this helps, remember they're just kids (don't be afraid)! Stay safe & good luck!

Some things to consider in fire safety is ask the preschoolers if the family residence has a working smoke detector and do mom/dad check to see if the detector is working properly. do they practice a escape route in the event of a fire and do they know where to go once they have gotten outside(meeting place). also explain to the preschoolers that do not hide under their beds or in closets in the event of a fire.If you are doing this with a partner have them don their turnout gear including their scba and demonstrate to them how you do a room search and explain to them not to be afraid of the FF. also let them put the turnout coat and helmet on. These are some ideas that I have taught to preschoolers and let me tell you its awesome!!!!!! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!
