An early morning house fire Saturday killed four people, including two firefighters trapped by surging flames while trying to rescue one of the home's residents, authorities said.

Capt. Matt Burton, a 35-year-old Concord resident, and Scott Desmond, a 37-year-old Brentwood resident, were the Contra Costa Fire District's first line-of-duty deaths in memory.
Two Firefighters, Elderly Couple Die In San Pablo Fire
Two firefighters raced into the structure, looking for the two residents who were in their 60s. They found one of the body, but it was during the search for the second that the fatal 'flash over' or back draft exploded in the back of the structure and overwhelmed the men in a ball of fire, killing them.
