A Paramedic/EMT/Fire Fighter's Life

"A Paramedic/EMT/Fire Fighter’s life"

It may take you two minutes to read this, but if you do not take the time to read this you are one of the people this post is talking about.
You stay up for 16 hours

He/she's been up for 48 hours straight
_________________________

You take a warm shower to help you wake up.

The rain in the middle of the interstate keeps him /her awake.
__________________________

You complain of a "headache", and call in sick.

He/she's chilled to the bone, hasn't eaten all day, has the flu, and then comes to your home to take you to the ER since you have a "headache."
__________________________

You drink your coffee on your way to the mall.

He /she gears up to fight a structure fire..
__________________________

You make sure you're cell phone is in your pocket.

He/she makes sure the radio is working to give report to Dispatch.
__________________________

You talk trash about your "buddies" that aren't with you.

He/she watches their buddy have a tear run down his face after a DOA call.
__________________________

You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.

He/she walks down the highway looking for the motorcyclist missing limb.
_________________________

You complain about how hot it is.

He/she is soaked from the sweat after working a Fire call for 4 hrs..
__________________________

You go out to lunch, and complain because the restaurant got your order wrong.

He/she hasn't seen a meal since last shift at breakfast.
__________________________

Your maid makes your bed and washes your clothes.

He/she's worn the same stinking, wet, grungy clothes for the past 24 hours....no time for a shower.
__________________________

You go to the mall and get your hair redone.

He/she holds the hand of some college girl while she's getting cut out of a vehicle with the jaws of life after a car accident
__________________________

You're angry because your class ran 5 minutes over.

His/Her shift ended 2 hours ago and he on for another 24 hours at a station thirty miles away.
__________________________

You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.

He/she calls his girlfriend/boyfriend to cancel their plans, since he has to stay over after a late call.
__________________________

You yell and scream at the Ambulance that just past you because they slowed you down.

He/she's driving the Fire Truck, going to rescue somebody out of their car only to find out that they're already dead and their daughter is barely alive. --- And wondering why YOU don't pull over.
__________________________

You roll your eyes as a baby cries.

He /she cries as he hears his new born cry in the hospital....because he was taking a drunk teenager in when his boy was born.
__________________________

You criticize EMS/Fire Fighters and say their never there quick enough .

He/she blows the air horn while the person in front of them refuses to move while talking on their cell phone and doing their makeup.
__________________________

You see the bright lights when you go by.

He /she sees the broken bodies lying around the car.
__________________________

You are asked to go to the store by your parents. You don't.

He/she looks into buying a bullet proof vest because he has been shot at trying to save the shooting victims life. (damn this is me)
__________________________

You stay at home and watch TV.

He/she takes his spare time to wash the Ambulance or Fire truck, restock the Unit and maybe call their spouse to tell them not to worry, they'll be home the next night.
__________________________

You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.

He/she tries to sleep on his spring board bed but keeps getting woken up by the gong and bell, ahh, one hour of sleep, it should due till tomorrow night.
__________________________

You sit there and judge him, saying the that its a waste of money to have them around.

Garbage truck workers make more than he does, but its not for the money, its for the people who don't appreciate what he/she does.

I agree with everything you said. I have been in the fire service for 15yrs. It has gotten to where I have about 2 or 3 hrs. of sleep a night even when we are not busy. You stated that a Garbage man makes more than you. Well, Anybody makes more money than a volenteer because we make nothing. I have not seen a dime in 15yrs. And I would have it no other way. I have had some people say they could not do what I do for nothing, And I tell them thats because you do not care like I do. That may seem harsh but it is the truth. I understand this is not for everybody. If you care about something strong enough, Then you give it your all. It may not be with Fire/EMS. Just volenteer with something. You will feel good about yourself. I have to go now. Talk at ya later.
