This morning I got called out to a local nursing home for a sick pt when we got there we find out that the pt is in cardiac arrest. So I send my partner to the unit to get the LP12 I walk in the room by myself as soon as I walked in the nursing staff started leaving. That pissed me off becasue that always happens down here. I told them " where the hell do you all think your going get back on that chest and BVM you all are trained for CPR too. Needless to say one of the nurses got pissed off and took off the other 2 stayed and helped out. Then while working the pt told them by the way where is your AED I know you are supposed to have one handy? No one answered me. My point here is down here where I'm from on every cardiac arrest I've been to at a nursing home the nursing staff flee the room on arrival like roaches would do when you turn on the lights if you know what I mean. Am I alone here or what?????

I think the same thing happens pretty much all over,I have told my children if anything just prop me up in a wheel chair in the middle of there back yard and a glass of water on the other side of the yard.......... and if they ever wanted to know how nursing homes tended to their pt. all they would have to do is look out there window.......Ha Ha

I can relate in many ways. I work for a combination service, and I volunteer for a fire dept. We have responded to several nursng homes and even hqad a doctor there looking at the patient not doing a thing. I is a crying shame that we as families pay alot of money to those places and the level of care is sickning. I would like to see more accountablity for nursing home staff and their certification.

oh no...your definantly NOT alone here. I work on an ambulance here in arkansas and the nursing home that is in the town that I work in is amazingly WORTHLESS!!.. They called the station one night and stated.." We have a patient that needs to be transported to Baptist Springhill..so when you get a chance, will you come on over"...so my partner and I thinking it was nothing serious, that it was just a transfer didn't run lights or sirens to get there. We get there and walk into the room, and like your nurses, our nurses took off. We pull the blanket off of the patient to move her and noticed that she was completely modeled. We rushed her to the ambulance and took off running code to the hospital. We got about a block away from the nursing home and the poor lady expired. She had a DNR so I bagged her until my partner could get ahold of the Dr. to verify it. It was sad that the nursing home was so careless. A few weeks later, we got another call from them stating "when you can get here" and we ran hot to get there and thank God that we did....the man was in full code. I just honestly don't understand why these people are in this field if they can't treat their patients the way that they would want a member of THIER family treated.

I love it when they tell you she just now went unresponsive and the body is ice cold.
