EMS in my county is taking a beating for being first on the scene of a car in the water and not going in after a screaming victim. they are getting slammed by the citizens (none of which attempted a rescue of their own) saying that EMS has a responsibility to act...EMS adm. and I say that they did right by not acting since they were NOT trained to do water rescue...i believe in the first rule of rescue...."dont become a victim", but the rush to judgement continues. i am behind them 100% if you dont have the training, dont do it, besides if the medics get involved in the rescue and get hurt, then whos gonna take care of the patient? weigh in on this troops, they need some direction and support

Sounds like they were 100% correct to me. Most EMS units wouldn't be equipped to do a water rescue, or any other rescue for that matter. Probably the only thing that they could have done was throw a rope if they had one. You're also right, you can't help anyone if you're a victim youself. Unfortunately the public thinks that we can do anything because Fire/EMS have done some incredible things in the past. But, unfortunately we do have limitations and they don't understand that part, they just want to be rescued and they want us to be heros. But, we want to go home at the end of the day as well. Sometimes it can be a difficult role to fill.
