Some 75+ residents and scouts visited Evans Center's Erie Road Firehouse last evening for the fire company's annual Fire Safety Open House [PHOTOS AT END OF BLOG]
Everyone enjoyed the eight "Fire Prevention Stations" that Evans Center's Firefighters, Fire Explorers and FireCorps members set up around their fire station that focused on this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme of: “Practice Your Escape Plan!”
Participants were able to enter to win a digital carbon monoxide detector for their home and received lots of recruitment and fire safety information and a copy of the most recent Firefighter Newspaper in a handy notebook with pockets provided by FASNY.

Although Fire Prevention Week has passed, it's never too late for new ideas and I thought I'd also share a program we implemented last year with great success.
The Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company is proud to announce their community based fire safety program: “Fire Safety by the Slice! – Delivering Fire Safety Right to Your Doorstep.”
The program plays on this year’s Fire Prevention Week (October 8-14) theme of “Watch What You Heat!” – focusing on cooking and kitchen fires.
In cooperation with Evangola Pizza located at 8923 Erie Road in the Town of Evans, Evans Center Firefighters and their Fire Explorer Post 528 will deliver one random order to a lucky Evangola Pizza customer every Wednesday evening during October.
The program is simple, if firefighters find working smoke detectors in the home when they arrive – the customer’s order is FREE. If no working detectors are found – the customer pays for the order but the fire company delivers a FREE smoke detector, courtesy of Shultz & Co. Hardware & Appliances located at 2 North Main Street in Angola.
“Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Many of these are preventable by taking a little care in the kitchen. Our goal is to reduce the number of fires associated with cooking and appliances, and working smoke detectors are the first line of defense in surviving any fire in the home,” said Fire Chief Bruce Green Jr.
