Hmm how do I say this without sounding wimpy

I have been a volunteer fire fighter/EMT for fifteen years. Love the station I am at and I even get along with a majority of the career fire fighters. I say that since there are very few volunteers at my station, and at this moment I think I am the last "running" volunteer. My issue is that the volunteer corporation (name witheld so I won't embarrass them) has decided to sell my volunteer station. They say that I can come ride with them but most of them do not even know who I am.

They have never given me the opportunity to recruit new people and even when I have one possible good lead, they convince the person to ride at their station.

Maybe I am just being wimpy about it but I've never felt welcome at the other station even though the career fire fighter know who I am, where I live and even call me by my first name.

What you need to remember is that you have chosen to serve the public with your personal training and experience. Does the geographical location of that public - strangers in need - really matter that much?

I have been a member of three different fire companies in two counties and it hasn't hurt me to move around. You will make new friends and develop new relationships with the folks at the new house. While I am truly sorry to hear of a volunteer house being sold off, it is not the end of the world. Keep your head up and serve the public to the best of your ability. If this is truly what you enjoy, as I think it is, you can handle the change.

When I first joined it wasn't because I thought it was a neat thing to do, I joined cause I have a passion to be a fire fighter even if it is being a volunteer fire fighter. My mind says this chapter in your life is over and its time to hang up the helmet but my heart says differently.

Man that sucks. I am sorry to hear about your house. I guess its like anything else though, you ride with one crew for 15 years there is a different level of comfort there. I guess what you need to debate is how much you still love the job? Is it worth it to you to deal with the new house.

At my Voli house we have a few ex-chiefs and officers from other departments. I guess those are the types of guys that can sympothize with you. Mind you the way our structureing is, each officer spends two years @ that spot and then they can be elected on. The Chiefs in our area have spend an average of 12 years as an officerand 17 years in the fire service. But they loved the fire service enough that they became our probies. Listen to your heart on it.
