We are so far beyond spoiled today. I just finished watching the end of the Cowboys game in the dayroom at Station 2 and there were 3 of us in there jumping around, yelling at he 60" bigscreen TV. Sounds great huh...well, it wasnt long ago, at least 10 of the 11 guys in the station would have been in there. And at least 2-3 would have been cheering for the Bills, never mind we are oh 2000 miles from upstate NY. It's just how it used to work, there had to be the dicsenters to keep things lively.
Not today, not anymore...there are not spades games that start when duty day ends and only break for MNF or bedtime. Hell, start at lunch and go thru the evening...
For those of us who started doing this before fire stations had individual rooms with cable and DVD players, XBOX 360's, PS3's. We had TV with 3-7 channels and the brotherhood was just that, a brotherhood. We lived together...not just under the same roof. We all ate together, not just on holidays or weekend, but EVERY day. We were close...it was family. The You go We go was not just a thing to say, it was your Brother, the guy you lived with, ate with, and shared life with. he was the guy who stood up at your wedding, was your kids godfather...who else better to understand how to explain to your son or daughter if god forbid, they truly needed that godfather.
I miss those days...but, I also pray that todays probies, rookies, newbies, have the chance to know what true brotherhood is.
Come out of your room and watch a game with your brothers/sisters. Play cards and eat together...it'll make a difference.
