Pictures Being Uploaded causing Negative Public Perception

I don't want to sound like I am preaching here, but what is with all of the pics being uploaded that show alcohol being consumed. I think that we need to set a higher standard as Firefighters than just partying. What kind of example do you think this is setting for anyone that views the public page. I am sorry but too much is just that.... too much. I don't see what it does besides makes you look like you drink alcohol a whole lot. I believe that we should think about what we are going to put up as pictures before doing so. Remember in your career that you as a Firefighter or EMT are judged by John Q Public by what they see, not what you do. It is all about perception.

Enough ranting for now

I've never seen my Dept drink a drop at the station.

Its hard to tell who on the Department does or doesn't drink either.

In our town, everyone that activly is on the department and go's to most calls (Not many mind you) don't drink unless there is someone covering for them. Its also volunteer so..

I agree. We need the general public to view us as the professionals that we are. I'm not suggesting anyone should'nt post these types of photos, but I've seen several that gave me the impression that these were a bunch of "good old boys" drinking beer and responding to calls! Anyone who reads The Secret List knows that alcohol is a serious issue, especially in some volunteer F.D.'s where there is a bar in the firehouse. I'm just suggesting using some good old fashioned common sense when posting photos. Stay safe!

When pictures of public servants appear in a public venue, because you don't know if it's their first or their fifth, the wrong impression will always be drawn.
I can look at a picture of a demo derby car and pretty much know what I'm seeing, but if there are lights, lots of couples, lots of alcohol, then obviously, someone is "cutting loose". And that's OK.
I cut loose. I just don't post the pictures. It wouldn't be dignified.
Common sense when posting photos should apply here, but as we have seen, CS is in short supply.

Well in our town when we were able to drink in our fire houses, each fire house had its own rules. Our rules in our fire house said if you had a few beers that you could respond on out with the truck and even drive the truck.Other fire houses had no rules,If you were drunk you went to the call weather you were driving or not. Until a fireman responding to a call cracked up around a pole with his car, and almost died. Then our town put the boom down, And by the way this fireman is sueing our town because nobody stoped him from drinking in the fire house. So now until the dust settles, if there is a party in any firehouse, you need permission from the city manager.

I tend to disagree.. i think that yes sum of the pics put up may be a little much, like the one i seen with drugs in it but this is a place to share your proffesssional firefighter side and the fact that we can let loose and have a good time.. i put up a picture of my demo car so do you think that will make the public automatically asume i like to do nothing but tear things apart.. no they wont .. we all know that we will never get away from the scrutiny of the public.. so this website is for us firefighter emts medics and family members that know what its like to be in our stressful possitions.. if the general public wants to look at these pages and scrutinize well then i say let them because they are gonna do it anyways like they always have and always will.. at least it will give them sumthing to chat about while they are watching us bail their butts out of a sticky situation.. once again im not totally disagreeing with you fellas im just saying that people are gonna judge no matter what so just let it happen and enjoy your time here like everyone else..

I agree with all of these posts theres enough scrutiny when we take a few extra minutes to get on scene, we dont need to look like drunks.

Hear! Hear!
I DO drink (in moderation mind you), but I am surprised at the various states of drinking a lot of photos on here depict.

Sure this is billed as a "myspace for firefighters", but the close up pics of someone doing shots, their elaborate beer can pyramid, or other photos of imbibement don't help JQP's perception of us.
This website and other things like "Rescue Me" is the insight they have into our world. We don't need to give them ammunition to further a misconception. Especially when a lot of departments out there rely on taxes and levies to survive.

I don't drink either, I am the desginated driver everytime. All I am trying to do is make people think before they post something that's going to make all the rest of us look bad in John Q Public's eye. They don't remember that this is a public site.

This is an easy bandwagon for me as I don't drink alcahol- nothing, zip, nada, zero.

Gotta agree with ya'- it's so much about perceptions....
