Oh, don't think that it wouldn't work in a small town. We only have 1,600 people in our city limits and I'm certain we could get people to sponsor us.
The system I'm planning would come with anywhere from 4-12 potential spots that rotate throughout the entire site. But with a static site like yours, you could put them right on the home page. And if a business can't afford $50 a year for advertising, well, maybe they shouldn't be in business.
I know you've worked really hard on your site and trust me, I've been in that position of learning this stuff on my own.
What if the template system I'm considering offered a "sponsorship" sidebar where local businesses could sponsor your site to offset some and possibly even become a fundraiser for your department?
Tables are looking good! Not too terribly difficult eh? The CSS is actually pretty easy once you get a couple of columns/rows going.
Ok, being the anal retentive designer I am, the music on the pages - I would make sure that your users can turn it on if they want it and not make it automatic. I think that's in the top 5 things that turn people "off" to websites from the studies I've read. Just F.Y.I.
