Other Past or Current Departments and Organizations
Have worked in Montgomery County, MD as FF/Medic and at several individual "houses" in Washington County. I also worked as a Flight Paramedic for a while. I worked at, and volunteer at the fire dept. and the ambulance/rescue companies in Boonsboro (they are not in the same house in Boonsboro).
My Training:
EMT-P (National Registry and State), FF2, Rescue Tech, Haz Mat Ops , ACLS, PEPP, PALS, NRB, PHTLS.
About Me:
I don't even know everything I need to know!!! I love what I do, but it doesn't define me, and it is not the only thing that gives me fulfillment in my life. But I know, I could not easily do something else for a living and be as happy as I am doing this.
Day Job:
I don't currently have a non fire service job
Relationship Status:
Single
Why I Joined Fire/EMS
I was already in the medical field, started volunteering and after becoming a medic, I didn't want to do anything else. Over time, I've added various certifications, skills, and areas of interest, and eventually became a firefighter as well. I enjoy doing all of it, as well as some rescue stuff. I enjoy the brotherhood of the job, the physical requirements make me stay in shape, and the lifestyle suits me. I couldn't sit at a desk in an office and not wig out eventually...
Why I Love Fire/EMS
The people I work with and also that I am constantly pushing myself to new levels of ability, skill, and knowledge
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Keeping people trained and ready, money to keep equipment and apparatus up to date and in service, supplementing volunteer systems with paid people to get out on calls with enough manpower to do the job(s).

I found your page while looking around Firefighter Nation.
I'm an old member of Mt. Aetna and ran lots of calls with Boonsboro back in the day. I was around in the 1970's when Chief Shiffler was Chief 6. He taught my MFRI Basic class. Mike Weller from the Hagerstown Fire Marshal's office was also in that class.

It's interesting to see people from my old Washington County fire-rescue world on the Nation.

Is Leisha Sollenberger still around Co. 69? She was the original (I think) Chief 69 when it became a seperate company from Sta. 6.

I used to visit Hagerstown and ride with Squad 75 through the 80's and early 90's, but most of the firefighters and EMTs I knew back then have either moved on, retired, or unfortunately many of them have died.

I would be interested in hearing from you just to see how things in Washington County are these days. I don't get up there much except for an occasional weekend visit when I'm at a class at Emmitsburg.

Take care and stay safe,
Ben Waller

Wa.Co. is busting at the seams with growth...How long has it been since you were here? On the fire and ems side, there is an effort being made to start a career department of fire and emergency services...not associated with the IAFF guys in Hagerstown, the shirts say DFES on the back, but no union yet. They put out job ads for 9 ALS providers with Fire II level certification, minimum 2 yrs. field experience as a Paramedic. It is being filled as medic/fire suppression, so we'll see how it goes. Lots of details to be worked out, yet. I applied, but no one has heard a word yet.
Stay safe, and keep on keepin' on....
