Our mountain community is at high risk for wildfires, and we've had several nearby. Of the various volunteer options I have, I felt the fire service would allow me to contribute the most.
Why I Love Fire/EMS
The look on people's faces when I tell them I'm a firefighter. "But you don't really go into burning buildings, right? . . .The REAL firefighters do that, right?"
Top Issues Facing Responders:
Attracting and retaining qualified, diverse volunteers for suburban and rural departments.
Developing women and minorities for leadership positions in emergency services
Keeping skills current in departments that experience few non-medical calls, like ours
