At approximately noon on 1/29 DCFD and Westerly Ambulance/Rescue were called to the parking lot at Wal-Mart for multiple 911 reports of a man being pinned between a car and the cart collection rack.

Upon arrival, Lt. Jim Westervelt confirmed that there was entrapment, and in conjuction with WAC personnel on scene, began to consider options for extrication. The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee had apparently mistaken the gas pedal for the brake. In the process, the vehicle surged forward, striking 4 other vehicles. The last of these four vehicles was another SUV parked next to the cart receptacle. The force of the Cherokee forced the SUV up into the cart receptacle, and pushed that into a pickup parked on the far side of it, pinning a man who was loading groceries into the SUV between it and the cart receptacle. Extrication planning was made more difficult by the fact that the cart receptacle was full, and there were several carts in a distorted position, which, if disturbed may have further injured the individual.

It was decided to await the arrival of Westerly Amulance Corps' Rescue 1, and hydraulic jaws were then used to carefully cut away the carts and cart receptacle, freeing the individual, who had been trapped for approximately 12 minutes.

The trapped individual seemed to have only non life-threatening leg injuries, and was transported to Westerly Hospital by Westerly Ambulance. There were no other injuries.

Two flatbeds were required to remove all the affected vehicles, and at that point DCFD cleared the scene.
