EMT Yadira "Yari" Arroyo, 44, who served the New York City Fire Department, succumbed to injuries after being run-over by her ambulance on Thursday, March 16, 2017.
​EMT Arroyo was responding to a medical call when she was alerted that someone was riding on the back of the ambulance. She and her partner, Monique Williams, stopped and exited the ambulance to remove this person. When they did so, the suspect ran to the front of the ambulance and got in the driver's seat and drove off, striking and running over EMT Arroyo twice. EMT Arroyo was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, she did not survive the injuries and died at the hospital.
​The suspect, a 25 year-old career criminal was arrested after he crashed the ambulance into 3 parked vehicles and then attempted to flee on foot. He was captured by an on-duty officer with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the help of bystanders. He is charged with murder, grand larceny and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
​EMT Arroyo was a 14-year veteran of the department. She was the mother of five children. She will be greatly missed by her department, family, and all who knew her. Her dedication to emergency services and service to her community will never be forgotten.
