Type of Organization: Fire/Rescue Department - Volunteer

Job Function: Firefighter / EMT-Basic

Primary Fire/EMS Department:: Illinois Valley Fire district - Cave Junction, Oregon

Years With Department/Agency: Four

My Training:: EMT basic, CPR (goes without saying), Extrication, wildland, Pump operator. Coming soon; Water/high angle rescue.

About Me:: Joined IVFD in April of 2003. Have been on 15 structure fires having gone interior on 6 of them. I have done extrication 8 different times. I have been on so many medical calls, I can't count. Everything from a person being sick to a chest pain so severe we had to call the helicopter.

Day Job:: Non-emergent medical transport.

Why I Joined Fire/EMS: I fought wildland fires in California around the '80s. I came up to Oregon and, being addicted to the adrenaline, I signed up with IVFD. Now we go in burning buildings, do vehicle extrication and I got introduced to the medical aspect. I am currently an EMT basic but plan on going intermediate soon. Eventually I want to become a paramedic.

Why I Love Fire/EMS: a toss up between the adrenaline rush, sense of accomplishment, and the feeling you get when the job is done and somebody's life is saved.

Top Issues Facing Responders:: Dealing with budget short falls. Also, the area I live in is growing faster than we have coverage for, yet nobody votes in favor of bond measures that would help us expand.

I have recently commented on a post on this site that has to do with whether volunteer departments should be doing rescues. A thread off that discussion led to talk about how different neighboring agencies compete for incidents. Where normally, I think, competition is a good thing but this gets rather heated and sometimes to the detriment of the public. I went up there at about 2 and then Sid and I left and stood by the district with Rurel Metro. I ended up going back to the fire at 7pm to do PIO stuff. We had to take the media in and help get them some newsworthy shots. I didn't get done till 9:30 or so. I'm not gonna be at the asso. meeting in Aug. I'm going up to Douglas County fair to see Rodney Atkins. I am however gonna work with Bob and James on our free Tues. Bob wants some extra work with hoses and ladders. Hes trying to get passed on his rookie testing so I told him I would help. James just needs refreshers.

They effect more people over a greater range. (air currents move faster and more freely)Remember if you apply water to the vapors (so long as they aren't water reactive)it will condence the vapors and make it a LOT less likely to effect people outside of the burn. If it gets on the turnout PPE and its a meth lab you should have a DECON team on scene with haz mat and all members with exposure MUST be fully deconned and tested to ensure all chemical presance is removed. All the gear if contaminated bad should be removed, bagged and sent out to be cleaned and inspected thoroughly.
