SCBA's, Facial hair and company policies. I understand that OSHA requirements are as such, but how does everyone handle it within their companies and personel. What if any, actions are taken if members do not adhere to the rules.
Our policy has just laxed a little. When we got a new young chief one of the guys wrote a revised policy and sent it to him and he accepted it. Previously we could not let a mustache extend past the corner of our mouth, now it can extend down 1 inch. Any violation is breaking SOPs and members are subject to disciplinary action beginning with a verbal warning and progressing to write ups suspension although it is not really enforced that is how it is supposed to work.
I just checked in on this group and saw this thread. Our department does not permit beards or long sideburns or moustaches if they fall in the mask seal boundary. We are, however, permitted to have a "soul patch" (little under-the-lip psuedobeard) so long as it does not go into that seal area. In fact, I have one of these myself. The big deciding factor, however, is the fit test, which is computer-driven. If you fail it, you shave until you get it right. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Our policy is no more than 24 hours growth... And you are saying how do you police that? Well for the most part our guys stay clean shaven because they know company officers will not let them ride a truck. They usually end up on the medic and are given a warning later.
In our department we have to be clean shaven any time we put a mask on. If not the chief takes your interior status away until you agree to comply. We have the luxury of of each interior member having their own issued mask. So if they violate the rule we take their mask away. It is for the fire fighters saftey only.
Here in Michigan are department sog state that you have to clean shaved. Mustach is ok as long as it is kept short. As a instructor for the state we can not allow anyone in training that has anything other than a short mustach. Are Chief has been known to had a firefighter a razor and have them dry shave on the spot.

If anyone has facial hair extending "at or past the mask line" they are required to shave immediately or be sent home without pay for that shift, 3rd offense of being sent home results in termination 2nd is 3 shift suspension
