i agree, in my department to be promoted to firefighter from jumior or explorer whatever your department calls them all you have to have is your 1403 which is not enough in my opinion to be able to do any interior firefighting other than in a live burn. I cant really say to much because i am only 19 but i am level I and II certified and like corey said just because you have the certifications doesnt mean you can do the job safely or know everything abiout it. I personally dont think just the 1403 should be enough to do interior firefighting, but hey if ive learned anything from the fire department its that my opinion doesnt really matter since im not an officer

I have found out that in some county's the AHJ has said that they will promote firefighters from Probation to interior firefighters by them getting all 1403 classes. Can we not all agree that NFPA 1403 is a training standard? NFPA 1403 is the standard for live fire training. this does not imply that once this training is complete that the firefighter knows all there is to know about firefighting or can think on their own in actual fire conditions. Training fires are alot different than emergency call fires. In Training fires we all think safety and have two or more instructors and at least one safety officer walking in and around the house. We have also walked through the house prior to lighting the fire and made all unsafe conditions safe. I think that if we are going to stop killing firefighters we need to look at how we are allowing them to respond to and participate at emergency calls.

if you are 1403 certified that is just part of your level I and II and it is the requirement to do interior firefighting

Can anyone enlighten me?
I have heard the saying. I am a 1403 firefighter.
What does this mean to you or your department?
