switch to five inch LDH
I am considering a grant proposal to change out our two engines from 4 inch to five inch LDH. We are a rural area with no hydrants but large lakes for water supply. Some of our lays have exceeded 2000 feet and when running into towns with hydrants we would like to be able to flow more water. Many of our mutual aid comanies are making the switch slowly but our budget would never allow this to happen in this century! With the cost at around 900 a section, a grant is the only option. Any opinion on whether this makes any sense?

I think it makes great sence. Anytime the government will help you buy it let them. The only concern is doing rural water shuttles it maybe a hindrence, depending on the size a location of your tankers. You fiqure 1 gallon per foot , so 100 gallons per section, we got caught with our pants down by laying 500 ft to a waiting tanker at the end of a long drive way, by the time he filled the line up he was at 1/2 tank , and we payed for it several times during the fire. We carry 1200 ft 3" split loaded and 1200 ft 5" and use the 3' either as one long single lay, or 2 seperate 600' ft lays if needed and save the 5" for the hydranted areas.
