Previously any function that my department attended the entire membership wore the 'Class A' uniform, jacket, parade style hat, etc.  With the recent absorbtion of another department it was not in the budget to outfit them all with new Class A's, so the Chief has had us all fitted for and ordered what we'll call Class B uniforms.  To my best description these are similiar to a station uniform, navy blue button down shirts and Dickies style pants.  My question here is with the new uniforms, should the Honor Guard wear the 'Class B' when the membership does or continue to wear the Class A. Thanks for any input.

As the Commander of my Guard, my opinion is this;

The Honor Guard is (or should be) the elite. Not everyone should be a member just because they want to be one. Prospective members must prove they have what it take to have the privilege of wearing our colors.

My unit has their own uniform which is different from the department uniform. It is worn at any official department function. We stand out because we have proven that we live our motto, "Not to set the standard, but to exceed it".

Fortunately, my Chief and I discussed the uniform policy. I explained my reasoning, and he approved the changes. But the Chief does have the final say.
The Honor Guard should be different at certain events. Our Honor Guard members have a Class A uniform for regular dept. activities and a completely separate HG uniform for our special details that we take part in. We were lucky enough to be donated $10,000 for training, uniform, and equipment by a local foundation. My thought, if you can talk your chief into letting you use the old class A's until you get something permanate that will set you apart that would be great. Good Luck.
