We don't ask our public works folks to do bingo to buy a new dump truck. We don't ask police officers to hold a pancake breakfast to buy police cars. We do, however, expect our Firefighters to raise all or a portion of their operating and capitol funds by doing "fund raisers". And in most cases they are volunteers. They train, respond to emergencies, maintain the stations, do administrative work (and all the other stuff) and still raise our own money. Sometimes we are stretched very thin! We need a business plan that will provide a steady, reliable source of income for our emergency response agencies.
I have begun a program called "Healthy Fire Departments" designed to address the financial needs of fire & EMS agencies and the needs of our members. We must begin to address the wellness (physical and financial) of our responders AND the financial wellness of the organization.
