Now, I don't want to perpetuate the whole war of the genders but...I found this quote by Charlotte Whitton which I thought amusing because it definately rings true for me. What do you ladies think?
"Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily this is not difficult."
Charlotte Whitton, Canada Month, June 1963
I'm kind of one to believe that things stay an issue if one coddles said issue. I guess you can kind of say it's like "rising above" the stereotype. Do you best. Do better than your best. Do it with passion and heart and conviction- and you will gain respect. There will always be SOMEONE that won't respect you. There will always be SOMEONE that doesn't like you. There will always be SOMEONE that won't support you. Respect, like and support yourself and don't worry about the ones that bring you down if you let them. Just be proud of yourself for working hard to accomplish your goals- without the fact of gender entering the picture.
I totally agree. Yes, it may take more for use to do the same job, but we can do it just as well, if not better. I am soon to be the only female firefighter on a volunteer dept. I know i will have to work my ass off to show I deserve to be there, but it is so worth it. My favorite quote is from Joan of Arc " I am not afraid, I was born to do this." Stay safe, great topic.

that is a good one. But also remember, Men do work twice as hard as women because women do things right the first time. I saw that somewhere once.

I like the quote. In the year and a half (or so) that I've been a Part Time FF on a Paid dept, I have learned a lot. One of the things I noticed first was the fact that as I worked through the orientation portion of being hired, I was critically weighed and assessed by all the other firefighters-- mostly guys with a few ladies. It was no different than the other 8 PT FF's hired with me that were male. They looked at us newbies to see if we could do the job, if we were willing to learn, if we worked hard... and it wasn't a gender thing, it was a new FF thing. Each one of us has to prove ourselves. Some of us may feel we have to prove ourselves over and over again. But as many of you have said... it is SO worth it. I love this job and wouldn't trade it for anything. Period. Stay safe!! and good luck to all of you.
