Explorer Scouts is where I got my start in 1973.We fought brush fires pulled hose for the FD,worked rehab at most incidents. Most of the FF treated the scouts as one of the crew.We trained with the FD,had uniforms and they worked our butts off.It was a experience I'll never forget or regret.

I just actually got out of my explorer post...we had some problems and i decided that if i could go to my home department i would be better off...the fire department we were under treated us as maid's, threatening not to sponsor us if we did not clean up the fire hall every week, and then they expected us to come and help them at their functions without a thank you. But all in all the experience taught me an important lesson and trained me to be with the "big" boys. I learned stuff about fire extinguishers, and we were the ones that filled air bottles so i can do that now in my department and im ahead of some of the "big boys" that have to go through months of training for it... we also learned cpr and arson and other stuff...I firmly am a supporter of explorer programs, if they are ran right...
I totally agree with you.
I am a explorer at my local FD and even though they joke and cut up everynow and then with me, I am one of the crew up there and I would lay my life down for them and they would do the same. In the past few years I have been noticing that the bond between the Firefighters and Explorers/Volunteers has grown greatly, because most of the time firefighters dont want to be associated with volunteers or explorers b/c they have moved up in rank and deserve more and I am glad I am apart of that FD. I would never give this opportunity up for anything in the world!
It is a great ineracting enviroment with lots of people and you learn social skills, along with rescue/fire procedures and you also get to do what most people dont do in their ordinary day.
I have been an Explorer with my local fire department for a couple years. Before I joined I was not really sure what I wanted to do for a career. After my six month probationary period I went to my fires call, which happened to be a house fire. Seeing everyone working together to try and suppress the fire, and having each others back inspired me. I am now going to college to receive a degree in Fire Prevention Technology in hopes of becoming a career firefighter. I am still an Explorer but I am putting my application in for the EMS and Fire side of the department.
I joined my explorer post and I love it because even tho where at the bottom of the polill . Where treated like one of the guys and it small so I know every and we get along so well. Eventhou we get messed with. I still love it and will keep climbing the ladder to reach senior membership
