George , I would really like to see the the report that you read about more FFs getting killed at an accident than a structure fire!! The simple FACT that structure fires are down in numbers is the most inportant reason we need to train on things like RIT,FF Survival, engine company operations, fire attack and so on and on and on..............but most people dont want to put in the time, they just want the wacker lights all over their vehicles as a look at me, once again go f^ck yourself!!! Get out there and train. Alot of Fire depts. in the area are very poor in their fire attack abilities that it is almost funny...... But the home onwer isnt laughing when their house is burning down. I really dont think you are giving structure fires the respect they deserve when you compare them to an accident, and everyone needs to remember THOSE WHO LIVE IN A GLASS HOUSE,REALLY SHOULDNT THROW STONES!!!!!!
Max I feel this is a great thing but I also think 18hrs a year is a joke!!! I understand this is all new and the state needed to start somewhere but come on.
where does it go?
I think it should be atleast 50hrs a year. That is only 4.16hrs a month, if someone cant give 4.16hrs of training a month to their dept THEY DONT NEED TO BE IN THE FIRE SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also think there will still be the chiefs that pencil whip the training log, and if that happens that chief needs to get the f^ck out of the fire service too. The only thing he is doing is setting his dept. up for failure. But once again 18hrs is better than nothing.
Everyone can use training, if a station doesn't want to attend, let them stay home. As for RIT, RICE, Air management, and structural collapse, This training is new and is needed in this County. Why is it that a station says we had a basic whatever class and now they are looking for the same basic whatever class again? what the hell is wrong with this picture? You should never need two basic classes. Pull the crap off the rigs and train with it and take it to the next level
Your station should be prepared as much as possible for any type of emergency when called upon. Work schedules could be a problem for some, but these trainings are months ahead and I'm sure we could work around one day to be there. It's all about wanting. Once a station goes forward with trainings and getting involved with new things you see the difference in the membership listening to officers, self discipline and policing others that make the same dumbass mistakes. training brings the morale up in a station. Basic+ advance,+ advance= wow we are good! This county is heading forward and I believe it will continue... BE SAFE!!!
First off the level needs to be more. I think 40 hours a year at least. As you go perhaps you can test out at 120 or 240 if you have the skills. The re cert is one of the best things i think the state has done. For those of us who make the county meeting remember the numbers. Before the re cert 130,000 people where registered as fire fighters. After the re cert 36,000 fire fighters. How do you appropriate grant moneys when that count is that far off? How do we know what trainings are needed in what area and what needs revamped to fit the need. I'm also a BIG fan of NIMS. Ok ok i know what everyone says when they hear the NIMS word.. but think about it all it is,is ICS we have had that for years. We had the best system and now the police ems government public works all on the same lay out we have used. Any department that was awarded a grant and said yes we are NIMS complaint should have to prove it. There are departments out there busting their tales to be what they claim they are what they say they are and some jack off's over here is getting grants because they claim they did. I take pride in the fact that.
.
So now let move on to the other parts that have been added to the topic lol.. I have to say sorry i thought i would get the first rant off. First off D comparing incident is never a good thing. The home owner whos house is burning down is the same tax payer that was involved in the MVC. I dont know who your words are directed to George however they are for one person. In all honesty i would put RIT well above traffic calls. Again there are no firefighters killed when the road is shut down. Clearing the road quick i see the need for that and its all and well. But why take risks we dont need to. We should have a RIT team every time there is a structure fire. (and more but keeping it shorter lol). The RIT and survival training that went on for the county school should be required. Point plank we should have to learn from the word go that is what its all about about. Whats it going to take for us to want to learn to be safe?? will it take a movie about us saving our own asses? Remember save your air nightingale made everyone not want to wear air packs because it looks cool not to.. or lets say when we all wanted to be come shepherds.. or sorry truckies because of ladder 49. wtf ever. Yes an fd need to have an understanding of traffic and how it works but then again if we had cops that would do their jobs we wouldnt have to. (sorry Cliff not a shot at you buddy).
.
the quick clear class was good and i did take away some things from it. However we train on traffic control but who knows how the car of today is with SRS (safety restraint systems) who knows the difference in srs, srs second generation, srs next generation. Who in this county works around the new srs's as they extricate??? anyone anyone anyone???? my department does because i have hounded them. The days of the we had them out in 10 minutes is over.. If that is your bragging right please advise me so i know not to drive threw your area with a car made since 1998. we push forward but we do it in the wrong area's at times. We learn to move traffic but not how to deal with the cars that are in them.
.
honestly lets really look at things as if goes for FF deaths.. find me where it is not that more of us die medically than any other way. Heart attacks and strokes take more of us out. I believe the lower number of structural deaths are because safety and survival training. Subscribe to the secret list and see all the maydays give and covered by RIT. We kill ourselves with poor health poor driving poor training.
To have a RIT class available for free is definitely unheard of. This should show the want the instructors have, to get this county up to speed for a need and soon to be mandatory on a working fire.NFPA 1500. I know of classes that if you miss, you not only get yourself barred from the next training but you get your whole department barred. How many people out of the last RIT class will honestly keep up and practice what they learned ? How many called D and asked any questions on what they did ?
I was going to bring a RIT class here for our guys until I heard that D was putting one on. I got ridiculed for bringing up the subject on RIT. ( he's trying to be big city ) they say. I attended a Big city tactics for small rural communities class and I have to say once you bring in your mutual aid, there really is no real difference. You can tell someone who knows a shit from someone who talks a shit.. I better stop there..... BE SAFE!!!
I know it is a big kick to the junk when someone bad mouths your training. We have heard it alot about the RIT training. Like Griff said hes been told"thats big city stuff" and "why do we need that". The said thing is something big will have to happen (LODD) in the county before most depts will open their eyes and get on board. As for your situation, if you know who ran their mouth call them out on it and clear the air!!! It might be just a big misunderstanding or a third party just stirring the pot. The bottom line is, training in the fire service is just like an engine........without them your not going to be proficient at the task at hand!!!!!
What i am saying is MVC and Structures are different incidents. Different tactics. We respond to both. We need to know what is going on with both. Honestly no training should be put on the back burner just my thought. We cant train for one thing for ever then we will suck at something else just the way the ball bounces sadly. I wasnt calling you out D just saying MVC are our residence as well. When your cutting him out of his or her car they are just as concerned when you roll up to their home on fire. They dont want to see a bunch of jackoff's not knowing looking or doing what they should be..
People will talk no matter what we do. I believe you and i had this talk before D that when the people who say we are wasting time and a bunch of p*ssys because blah blah yada yada wtf ever get into shit whos the first people they call. They know when they call us they are getting top notch. After they are bailed out then its back to we saved the world those guys messed everything up. Until the next time they need saved. We need to protect our own and the fact LODD'd are coming down and injuries are on the up shows these are tatics that need to be out there. We need it in this county who is soooo far behind the curve we have to rush forward 20 years to be 5 behind.
