Fire Classes in EP....We need some feedback from everyone please!!
Hey All,
I just want to get the opinion of the Chiefs and/or anybody that has a say in who attends the State Certified fire classes that we put on in East Palestine. As everybody knows, we put on a 36 class in the spring then a 240 class in the fall/winter. As we discussed in our instructors meeting last night, what would everyone think if we did 3 classes per year. This means we would do a 36 in January, an 84 starting in March, then a 120 in the fall.
This set-up could be beneficial to a lot of the Depts in the county. We know that there are some Depts that have minimum requirements of the 120 now, which is great! Some Depts only have a minimum requirement of a 36 class. So this could possibly mean the Depts that want the 36 are done the first of the year, and the FF1 is done before June. If the Depts choose so, then they can have their people continue into the fall to finish up with the FF2 course and be done before Thanksgiving. Every 240 class that we have done has finished up just days before Christmas. I know as well as everybody else, that is a pain in the butt. People are trying to get their shopping done and its just a hectic time all together.
I know there are a lot of people that would love to have everyone certified at FF1 or higher. This could be a great way of doing it. Plus I think there is a lot of POSITIVE results that would come out of this schedule. So please give us some feedback!! Works for me we only require 36 but i have firefighters interested in the 240 so whatever you come up with just let me know.

What fun would it be if the HAZMAT class was not done in 0-20 degrees and a foot of snow on the ground? I do like the idea of having the classes in steps though. I would like to see everyone on our dept. atleast have the FF1 but we have a few people "set in their ways." Anyone that knows me know what and who I am talking about (but that is besides the point). I liked your 240 class and I am sure that you will figure it all out.

No matter how the time schedule is set up, there will always be conflicts with work schedules and family commitments. I feel that running the 36 hour sessions on Sunday afternoon/evenings is a good approach, it works well for my attendees. The 84 and 120 approach is doable as well, but a person may have to stretch it out over a 3 year period to keep some individuals out of divorce court with their spouse. I don't think too many would be in favor of committing an entire year of training outside of the department at one time. Yes, I for one would like to see our members obtain FF1 and FF2, but because some of them have job constraints, both daily and seasonal, it is very hard to to do the 84 & 120 or the 240 at one time.
The East Palestine training crew does an excellent job in your fire training program and making it available across the county. I for one will support you in which ever direction you go and will continue to send our firefighters your way when they need the certified training. My hat's off to all of you!!
As far as the Haz Mat training, if you are going to continue the 240 class in the fall, why not schedule the awareness and ops in the early part of the class in Sept./Oct time frame and save some of the other indoor trainings for the Nov./ Dec. time period. I have wondered about this for several years, but that has always been the request on your part to run it at the end. But on the other hand, having to do daming and diking in the winter time does give one the experience of doing so when that gasoline tanker skids off the snowy/icey road into the ditch and loses it's load. -

my wife just read this over my shoulder and she is all for it . Question though , if you take all three classes over three years how much over-lap would you have? I'ts been years since I had my 36 and there are always new things to learn (I learned the fire triangle vs. the tetrahedon) so how will this change the different classes? I would love to take the 84 /ff1 class (this year)
