I'm not a piper, but have friends on the DC Emerald Society. Those guys started a band about 10 years ago after spending time with the Dublin Fire Brigade P&D Band.
Those guys would be a great source for getting started.

Just my 2 cents.

The Dublin firefighters band was brought together after FDNY, and after vistaions across thepond on Both sides
Unlike what the emeralds want you to believe the "Great Highland bagpipe" was adopted because the irish only had the smallpipes for a very long time, With over 120 Pipe bands in North America and only two in Ireland My money is leaning on this side.. I will admit When holding meetings I'd much prefer the brogue to a "ya'll" or a "beep boop bop badda bing" ...lol The Brothers In DCFD have come along nicely and do a fine job, don't get me wrong... But for me I was playing 12 years before the events of 9/11/01 finally get them to get off they're butts and Finally create a band and unfortuanately being known for playing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" sorta rates up there with My own rendition of my "Elvis medily" DCFD debuted in 2002 so they formed realisticly as i've been told 9/11 was the only reason they were able to actually get it together after several earlier attempts to get guys interested.... They have something few other bands have in that they have the attention of the entire nation and might be a driving force in instigating other less fortunate organizations and groups to start bands and play and honor the fire service the potential for being the center of attention there is unlike any other place in the whole US , but... ya dont hear or see much of them...at least as much as I might expect.. kind of a shame.. dont get me wrong I am not ditzing em.. but there are many others that work just as hard to have any kind of recognition as a pipe band....
