FIREFIGHTERS INJURED IN NEW YORK-COLLAPSE AT STRUCTURAL FIRE:
4 Firefighters operating at a commercial building fire in Allegany County town of Friendship (NY) were injured this morning (3 critical at the time of this report). Initial reports are that the FF's were making entry in the rear and the rear wall collapsed without warning. One report is that it collapsed nearly vertical with a debris field of about 15 feet. The Firefighters were entrapped for an unknown short amount of time. Initially no one knew of the entrapment until someone heard one of the least injured guys yelling for help. 3 of the firefighters are from Cuba (NY) and one is a Friendship Firefighter. Reported injuries are 1 FF with possible collapsed lung and broken vertebrae, 1 FF with possible broken back and neck, 1 FF with possible broken arm and facial injuries, and the 4th is unknown at this time. Update on the Friendship, NY collapse with injuries:
Cuba Fire Chief Derek Clement said heavy smoke billowed out of the building as firefighters pulled up to the scene.
He said three Cuba firefighters - Nick Sweet, Bryant Hughes and Aaron Appleby - and a Friendship firefighter were injured when the back brick wall of the building buckled out, showering them with bricks.
He said Mr. Sweet has a fractured neck and fractured vertebrae. And Mr. Hughes has injured vertebrae.
Chief Clement said the accident happened quickly, shortly after firefighters began battling the blaze. As the fire burned, it weakened the interior support of the two-and-a-half-story building.
“What happened is the roof came down and it pushed the wall out,” he said. “They were outside the building near the rear entrance when it collapsed.”
In Ohio there is a law regarding emergency vehicles. You are supposed to move over one lane away from the vehicles in order to avoid the problem. Obviously, this does not always happen.
According to a personal conversation I had with the assistant chief from Friendship, the two firefighters from Cuba are coming home tonight, albeit in back braces, et al; but will be home for Christmas. Their road to complete recovery will be long.
However, the Friendship firefighter has had two surgeries so far, is still in the intensive care unit and will require further hospitalization. Please keep all affected parties in your thoughts and prayers, especially during this Christmas season.
Please stay tuned to the Cuba Fire Department web site for patient updates as well as information coming soon as to how you can help support the financial needs of their families: www.cfdsmokeeaters.com.
As I said on Dave Blank's post regarding this:
Please consider a donation to help the family in this critical hour of need. They could use a Christmas miracle right about now.
Donate because it's Christmas, donate because it's the right thing to do, donate in the name of brotherhood. I don't care if you have to roll change or juggle funds, or maybe pass up on that daily Starbucks venti mocha latte for a week....everyone is experiencing the same financial belt-tightening, and I don't know about you, but I can't stand around with my hands in my pockets and hear about a firefighter in ICU with a wife and five kids who won't have a Christmas this year, and not find the money to help.
Make your holiday season mean something this year.
