Why do you love this job?

I just wanted to hear from all responders from the fulltimers to the all volunteer brothers and sister what gets your blood pumpin for a call. I am a trucker on a ladder truck in Topeka Kansas and catch a fair amount of fire; but what gets me goin is that call of a structure fire call and you are responting and disbatch is fielding multiple calls on it. It is that time that you are in the back of the truck and you know it is time to put your game face on or game mask as I like to call it:) Please tell me what you love about this job, the best job on earth.

I think I would be lying if I said anything else but the rush. You're right, there is nothing else on earth that will get the blood pumping more than dispatch comming back and saying they are starting to recieve multiple calls on this one run. Wheather it be a structure fire or a major wreck on the highway, these are the calls that get our blood pumping. Or if it comes across as an MVA with entrapment or a fire with entrapment.

Seriously though it is the same thing as others, any fire with multiple calls, a PNB, etc.

It would have to be knowing, that we made a difference in the outcome of the incident. Someone trapped in either a fire or a MVA, or for the matter of something as simple as a dog in a well. The bottom line the positive outcome! Knowing we made a difference in someones life.

And yes, a confirm working fire will get anyone's heart rate up a little!

It has to be that page for a structure fire. Smoke and/or flames showing, it gets your heart and mind racing. Knowing that you have the ability and duty to do all you can to help the situation. Then, when you roll up and see all that fire, there is just no other feeling like it. Only another firefighter could understand that.

Cause its not a job. Its a privileged! Knowing that what ever I do makes a difference in someones life and situation is inspiring. after almost 30 years it still gets my heart pumping.
