I've been reading a discussion on someone asking for advice in joining a department. Some of the posters have asked what the person's ultimate goal is, and why they want to join. It also came up that some departments have become more of a social club. So I put it to all of you, why did you join your respective fire departments and what do you think about these "social clubs?"

Myself, I'm glad and proud to be a volunteer firefighter and am working on becoming a career firefighter, not because of social stature, although seeing the look on people's faces when they ask and you tell them is quite a great feeling, I'm also there because I want to help people, want to be a trusting shoulder to lean on in someone's time of need, to learn, grow and mature, and because I'm passionate about my job as a firefighter. I've wanted to be one since I was 8 years old, obviously for different reasons, but although my reasons have matured, my love for it hasn't changed.
i kinda agree that the fire service is a social club. put it this way, when we're not on a call, or cleaning up the house, or training; we're sitting in the back room or on the apron and what are you going to do, sit there and twiddle your thumbs? hell no you are yapping your jaw. the firehouse is totally a social club when everything that has to get done is done. correct me if i'm wrong
I grew up in the fire service. Ever since I was a little boy riding in my dads truck to the station watching them all run in and put there 3/4 boots helmets and jackets on and jump on the rigs and sail off to save someone I wanted to do that. I was raised too always stop and help someone in need. When your raised with that type of morals and ethics it makes doing this job easy. I get paid for what I do now, unlike my father who did it for free. If they came too me and said we no longer have money too pay you would you volunteer? I wouldn't hesitate. I almost feel bad for being paid to do this job. When it comes too the social aspect of it I think it's good to have a sense of family and brotherhood. But when your priority is that and not providing service too the customer, training, and being the best firefighter you can be. I have a problem with it.
I joined because of the proximity to my home, so I got very lucky. We are like family, but more importantly we operate as professionals even though we don't get paid. I'd be disappointed with anything less.
I volunteer, I love the life of a FF/FR. helping others with anything is the way I always been.
Wish we were a paid department, but i dont do it for the money.
I must say the social part is important to me, I feel confident in any situation with my fellow FF's because I been able to be social with them and learn who they are, with that they have my trust and i have their back. We have paid FF's and EMT's that volunteer at our station, and our Chief teaches all over the state and country. yet he still takes time to volunteer out here. We are a great community, with an awsome school system, and good neighbor hoods. I will do all to protect it as would they..
The free education and personal trainig they provide through our tecnolegy center and department activitys are priceless. I am bleesed.....
I joined my vol. fire dept. in 1986. On May 31,1985 a f4 tornado ripped through my home town of Albion,Pa. At the time we lived in another town. After seeing the devastation and standing with my family at a grocery store and a buddy of mine ran in ( who was an EMT at the time) grabbed a bunch of first aid supplies off the shelf and ran out. I HAVE NEVER FELT SO HOPELESS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE ! First I joined an Explorer Post at a paid Amb. service. The rest is history. For what its worth I HOPE to never have to go through that again. And severe weather esp. tornado warnings and watches scares the bejeesus out of me.
I joined as a condition of parole....seriously, I joined because the greatest man I ever known was the chief of the fire company. My Uncle Thomas Bulah. Was also the first Black Fire in the state. I have a picture of me and my brother on the engine at 5 years old.
Money for nothin' and chicks for free. Why else would anyone join?
haha ok Mr. Knopfler lol haha. Good one
Interesting Craig. I'd like to hear some more of this story.
For me it was destiny! I have always LOVED fire trucks. The lights, the sirens, playing water, the whole thing. I still have a Tonka fire truck my dad bought me when I was like 5? In my las t year of high school, a local volunteer fire hall brought a 1958 chevy pumper to fix it up for them. I jumped in right away and ended up being incharge of the operation. Through that I got to know two of the station FF's and was told about becoming a Firefighter. Those two FF's a year later became my good friends and mentors along with some other really great Firefighters and officers! Sixteen months later I was hired full time thanks to them and many others who shared their knowledge and skills!
You have no idea how true that is for too many today!!!
