Trick question. The best rig is one that was properly spec'd out. You can get a lemon from any manufacturer out there is your specs are crap.

I like KME. I haven't dealt much with Pierce but I have trained on Suthpens. I didn't really care for them but I think it was more the way the Chief speced them out. Our neighboring dept. has 2 engines and a ladder from Sutphen and they like them. These are the same ones I trained with. I guess a truck is a truck. As long as it gets the job done.

i live in florida amd used to deliver Pierce appaatus from their plant here and i think that pierce's quality is better than others. i even like pierce over E1 as for Sutphen, i have driven several of their trucks in the 90's and they were ok

As far as I'm aware, 'Pierce' and 'Sutphen' are truck makes, yes? If so they can't be 'who', that applies to people. Trucks are built by companies and must be 'which' for your question. Which is the best? It's a subjective view. Neither make exists here so I don't even have an opinion!

I am a fan of seagrave, we have mostly seagrave trucks with 2 almonte fire trucks which were then bought out by seagrave.

I’m an E-One fan because of there custom cabs that go above and beyond the safety factor. They use roll cage construction. And as we see quit often those pictures out there of apparatus in wrecks just totally demolished...And I tell you what when it comes to keeping my guys safe money is not a factor, we don’t get paid near enough to loss our life in the hands of another. The E-one cabs meet or exceed compliance certification with ECE regulation No. 29 Addendum 28, Revision 1, Uniform Provisions Concerning the approval of Vehicles with Regard to the Protection of the Occupants of the Cab of a Custom Cab. To Exceed the Regulation No. 29 E-one has a cab structure with third party testing that will withstand a static test of 54,300 lbs. Now what that means is it exceeds the standard that has been provided and documented by Regulation No. 29 by 2-1/2 times...To me that if my guys are seat belted in and that apparatus was to flip or roll one , two, three, or 10 times it gives them a whole lot better of a chance to walk way from that accident then one that is poor quality and poor built...It all go's back to you get what you pay for and apparatus should not be skimped on when specing one out to put in service in your district...

When I first joined my dept they had a former chief who sold Young Fire Apparatus in our area and acourse our dept bought five pumpers. They also bought two Maxims pumpers. One stayed in our dept and the other went to a sister dept on the northern end of the county because of money problems. Stations had Seagraves, Pirches, Macks, Barucos, Youngs you name it it was in a station somewhere in the county if it was a pumper, ladder, squad truck or what ever.
In the past years the county has bought Seagraves while the volunteer depts bought what pleases them or can afford.
Our station has two Crismson pumpers which the chief had built his way over what the members wanted. We switch them around to save wear and tear on each of them.
But there has been talk of selling one of them and buying a new pumper, but building a new apparatus room addition and renovating the rest would be better. The chief also wants a new car too.

IMHO, Pierce has better ladders. You don't ever see a rearmount Sutphen straight stick do you?
Sutphen makes an ok engine, and they're alot better than Pierce Quantums and PUCS. Having been a driver and backstep fireman on both makes, I can say Pierce is my favorite, as long as it's not a Quantum, PUC, and speced out right.
