When entering a commercial building you need to take into consideration that the roof may be carrying a heavy load.
Although the roof systems are designed to handle the added load under normal conditions, when attached by fire, these roof top units will come crashing down.
The time to find out about what's on the roof is not during the fire, but during inspections and pre-planning visits. Get familiar with these buildings before it's dark and smokey.

Amen! One of he best things firefighters can do is check out the construction of new buildings in their districts from the pouring o the foundation to finish work.
Many lightweight steel truss constructed buildings, such as the local McDonalds/Wendys/Burger King et al. are considered to be "disposable buildings".. If one is destroyed in a fire, the company could conceivably have another brand new one up and running within a month or two.... they will install sprinklers when they rebuild... to water the lawn and shrubs to keep the landscaping looking nice...

Although not directly related to this topic-only because the building's units were mounted on the ground- 3-4 years ago we called MA to this place that had 4-5 businesses in it.One of the places was automotive repair place,we were sent gain entry to try to get the service bay doors open.Upon gaining access,we quickly realized that the doors were not going to open, and when some of the smoke had cleared,I turned to take my crew inside further, and almost walked into one of the car lifts--they had 3-4 cars up on the lifts, I told my guys to stay away from going underneath the lifts as I was not sure if the the lifts had been comprmised during the fire.Just thought I'd add this..
