Big subject!  So, just for starters, how about:

1. Introduction of organised fire fighting bodies, as opposed to a panicky rabble.

2. Invention of the manual fire pump

3. Invention of flexible hose

4. Introduction of PPE

5. Invention of the steam pumper

6. Invention of the escape ladder

7. Invention of the motorised pump

Great Chicago Fire

Peshtigo Fire

Triangle Shirtwaist

MGM Grand

Texas City

Cocoanut Grove

Our Lady of the Angels

Iroquois Theatre

Station Nightclub

Beverly Hill Supper Club

Worcester Cold Storage

Charleston Super Sofa Store

This is just a small list of notable fires where lessons were learned and implemented for fire protection.

In my department 9/11/01 was a big deal.  After the recent earthquake this summer, we learned that Washington, DC still isn't prepared for a major disaster.  I'm talking more the city(evacuations, etc), not the fire department.
