Jim Page, the founder of FireRescue magazine and a legend in the fire/EMS world, used to author a column called “Burning Issues.” He would talk about what he saw and experienced in his travels and, most importantly, what he thought firefighters and officers needed to know about and react to.
Although Jim is no longer with us, it’s important to us at FireRescue that our content continues to address those “burning issues”—so we strive to cover the training basics that are always needed but also touch on the hot topics and new challenges.
That’s where we’d like your help. What are the topics, issues and challenges you think we should cover in the coming months? What are the issues or problems faced by your department that you think need a voice, or should receive more attention than they're getting?
Is today's younger generation less willing to get involved in community service? Are increasing requirements making them hesitant to join? Why are so many of America's volunteer fire departments having trouble recruiting? The State Firemen's and Fire Marshal's Association of Texas has launched an initiative to boost memberships by providing free recruiting assistance to departments in Texas.
The overwhelming stress that politics have over the Fire Service. Having city ordinaces, finance availability, political agenda's, etc. being considered over employee safety and wellness. Its time the politics stop trying to run us. Politics should only be there for when and idea needs addressed that would affect the Service, not to be there to tell us what will be addressed and when it will be discussed at their leiszure. Since when should people with no prior Fire Service Experience have the say on the issues that they really know nothing about.
