CHARLESTON, Vt. - Authorities say a volunteer firefighter was killed when he lost control of the fire truck he was driving and the truck struck a telephone pole.

State police say 55-year-old Kenneth Frizzell Jr. of Charleston died Sunday afternoon as he was returning from a fire call. He was ejected from the truck when it hit the pole and pronounced dead at the scene.

Frizzell was a member of the Town of Charleston Volunteer Fire Department. He was the only person in the truck. State police say the truck was totaled.

The Dead They Sleep

The dead they sleep a long, long sleep;
The dead they rest, and their rest is deep;
The dead have peace, but the living weep.
