Using video as a training device
I wonder if we should take a note from sports and use video as a training device. I see video of fires were master streams are misplaced and handlines poorly positions. But I also do see some good things happening like proper engine/ladder placement.
Does anyone use video or is there a way to utilize it to help the department.

Yes, there are plenty of ways to use video for training. There are several great "how to" videos out there from forcible entry to FF bailouts, etc. Many such vids are submitted by the firefighter instructors. Then of course there is video of actual events where things can be learned.
The issue with videos though, is to apply the lessons within your dept and to treat them as learning tools. What I mean is there are countless times, even here, where a video is placed to be "critiqued". It is easy for many to point out obvious problems and to criticize the FF's or incident. The real lesson stems not so from criticizing, but how you can learn from the mistakes and how your dept can avoid similar occurances.
If using videos for training, the video should be a small aspect....watch it, then discuss, then go out and do hands on training. The video itself should not be the sole training aid. Also, it helps to group videos if looking to train on such a topic like ventilation, forcible entry etc.

Yes, we use it a lot. There are not enough opportunities to do large scale hands-on training scenarios. For all those in-between training meetings video is one tool that should be used to visually illustrate ways to do things and not to do things. Nowadays people expect motion and sound with classroon learning tools. They joke about "Death by PowerPoint," but they're right to expect more.

Videos in conjunction with practical application can make for some great training.
I like to see actual training vids used when the subject being taught is new or has not been used in awhile, this gives everyone the chance to see how it's done properly.
I also like to find short clips of actual fireground scenes and critique them with the members and then go out and try to duplicate the situations. You can learn a lot when you do it this way.
As you know, there are a lot of short videos out there and to prevent possible problems we always pick one that is not of us, or a neighboring department. TCSS
