types of packs
The volunteer dept that i am on still uses the hip mounted regulators and we have been trying to find somewhere to buy new packs. We have it narrowed down to what we would like to get but are still unsure. I would like to hear your opinions of what you use or what you would suggest and the companies that offer the best deals. Also are there any depts that would be selling their older packs because they are replacing them?

Like pretty much anything.....even SCBA will generate a ton of different opinions, and that is what they are opinion.
When I was a volunteer, our dept faced the same issue, we had the hip regulated MSA's and looked for SCBA replacement. We had vendors from MSA, SCOTT, SURVIVAIR, and DRAGER come in. We tried the packs on, went through likes and dislikes, seen if they would easily fit in our existing brackets, etc. We narrowed it down to two vendors we liked and asked to test the packs for about a month or so before making a decsion. We had a pack from each vendor, went through practice burns, used them in more rigorous training and so forth. Those who wore the pack gave their pros and cons and we voted on what we were going to go with. It worked out well for us to do so....give an honest look and give an honest test and go off of what the majority of the members want. I also have a preference and what we went with was NOT what I would have wanted...I ended up really liking the packs we did go with.

Ever since I have been in the fire service our county has used Scott. We had 15 minutes and 30 minutes when I started. The 15s were for officers and back step riders and the 30s were in the buckets. Steel tanks too. We have moved forward to where each member has their own mask and regular assigned to them and all they do is grab a tank and hook up.
We had 1 hour rebreather Dragers to use for the subway system and haz mat ops but I haven't seen these in a while.
