I invite everyone to please post ideas or pictures of the tools they use or would like to see created to ease C&O. I got this idea for this topic when my son came across my investigation kit and began to go through it and question me. Most of the items I have I saw other investigators use. Here are some of mine

3M Blue Painting Tape. You can use it to mark around items you need to remove and be able to replace them where you found them (like a chair or table). The tape does not stick to what its applied to (saw some CSI folks using it)

CSI ruler tape (saw this some time ago), it's a "roll of ruler tape"

White or florecent unlined index cards- I am too cheep to buy crime scene number and letter tent cards and use the index cards (folded into a tent and numbered with a sharpie) to place on items i need to photograph

A Garden Hoe- with a fiberglass handle. I cut off all but a one inch section in the middle of the blade to use to move things around (instead of crouching or bending over all the time). I actually have two of them, One has the full leingth handle and the other has a handle about the leingth of a cops nightstick. An investigator i shadowed when i was breaking into this business had one, (thanks Frank M)

Sounds good. A state fire marshal that I havehad to occassion to work with has a set of the head set magnifyers. They seem to work real well.
The other issue that I've started covering when I teach arson investigation classes is a laser measurer. Instead of using a standard tape measurer that should go through decon after every use, utilize a laser measurer. You can buy them at any large box home supply store and they are very accurate and easy to use.
Flat blade screwdriver and my nose. On one of my last arson fire I had to sniff out an odd order and follow it to a wall socket where the flat bladed screwdriver came in handy. This fire was solved within 23 hours and the Perk was arrested.
