Professional and amateur stargazers are in luck tonight. The moon is going to be at its closest position to the earth in 20 years. You can even take advantage of a visual illusion by looking at the moon while it's at its lowest position on the horizon. That will be during moonrise at 7:41 p.m. which happens just after sunset at 7:21 p.m. The moon is 31,000 miles closer to the earth than normal because of the oval nature of its orbit around earth. Typically the moon orbits earth from 211,000 miles away.

When the moon is on a closer tilt to earth it is at its perigee. Tonight the moon will be at its closest point along its perigee until 2029.  Super Moon's are more rare than a "Blue Moon" which happens every 2.5 years.

It must have made people out here crazy since there were 6 shootings that I know of overnight here in my city.
