I know many departments have manpower issues. It might be hard enough to get equipment out on runs. But if you can its time to think about hosting summer camp for kids. This would be a great chance to introduce kids to the fire service. Gain community awareness and improve your companies image.
When I say summer camp for kids don't think a bunch of 5 year old's running around shooting water. It could be 10-12 to 15 year old kids who can understand not only what is being taught but the limits placed on them.
Most camps are usually for 2 weeks. Cost range from $50 to $300. Food is provided. Time vary widely. What could you include in a fire camp? You have to plan out at least 10 days. Fire Safety/prevention, Engine operations, they could learn how to use a SCBA, use tools and fire hose. Rescue operations, how cool would it be to use a rescue tool. Ladder operations. Have kids go up on a bucket or raise ladders etc. EMS day. There are quite a few things we can teach kids that would take up 10 days and have fun and be educational.
I hope someone does this this year.

Is this something to be initiated in addition to the Explorer posts that some departments already have going?
