Okay, most of us have spraybars on our grass units. How many of you overuse them or underuse them. I would say we have some that overuse them and others that don't even use them at all. I've heard arguements that they are a waste of water. Pull out the whipline and walk with the truck is the key to putting out a grass fire, so I've been told. What are your thoughts?

We hit grass fires from the truck as we drive along. Whether on the black or the green depends on wind direction. If driving on the black, sprays on, driving on the green, sprays off. Not really much of a decision to make, tyres at risk, use the sprays.
Thomas, "Firefighter Up"? I don't know that one, could you explain please?

Oh, and I suppose I should have pointed out that our sprays are for tyre protection only, not as a method of fire fighting. We can often have a fire that want's to spread too far, too fast for us to try and do it from the ground - though that method is of course used for small fires.
there more of a mop up and emergency thing for me
Depending on topography and fuel, walking is fine if you have a creeping or smoldering fire. Otherwise, the judicious use of ground sweeps (spraybars) allow a faster attack and knockdown, and allow the next truck or two come behind to extinguish and mop up.

It's like any other tool in our arsenal. It's not a one size fits all solution, but if it is appropriate for the situation, why not utilize it. Work smarter, not harder.
one fear I would have if one of our brush rigs was outfitted with a spray bar would be that instead of firefighting, my crew would be stuck with watering down the roads for dust abatement, something that does not exactly make my top ten list of things to do at a fire...

this is especially true at fire camps where the number of vehicles traveling on make shift dirt roads create a ton of dust... this is best left to a contractor and a water tender outfitted with a spray bar, not a fire truck...

I looked through my archives to see if I could find a photo of the dust created from the dirt roadways... this is as close as I can get... dust sucks.
