In the fire service.. the use of the word a$$hole can be an insult, a term of endearment or both at the same time....
Examples...
Insult: You're an a$$hole!
Endearment: God, I love this a$$hole like a brother!
Both: You're an a$$hole!, but I love you like a brother.
