With the rise in arson fires , there is discussion in registering arsonist. What are your thoughts. Do you have a known arsonist in your area. What about the new firefighters that you hire. How many of you have had one on your department ? How did you catch them? We had 3 " Kids " that were caught from our department and a surrounding department a few years ago. Kind of embarrassing. What about the penalties ? Should they be stiffer . I say " Throw the book at them . Chime in and say your peace . And most importantly , Be safe .

I have yet to see an arsonist come out and be cured no matter what type of title you give them . An arsonist is an arsonist . I know this could lead to questions of registering other crimes but most other crimes do not cause death or injury. And with all the fires being lit to see one of us get hurt, we must have a way to follow these criminals . Lets not forget about our brothers and sisters that are no longer with us do to these sick people .These firefighters layed their lives down to save other peoples lives and property . God Bless all .
"Start a fire---GO TO JAIL. Someone dies in that fire___Death Row." - Jake Fireman

AMEN, Jake! I agree 100%. Why not register them like sex offenders. On the flip side, what if the insurance companies decide to charge you more for your homeowners insurance because a registered arsonist lives next door? (food for thought)

Stay safe!
That would be a great law.
yes I think that arsonist shoul be registered like sex offenders
Our brother Jake hit the nail on the head. Period.

Damnthing quantified the points identifying various types of arsonists and pointed out the problems with serial arsonists.

My add to this is to have the arsonists need to be there during debridement in a burn ward and to watch and suffer with the burn victim as they scream in pain. I like the idea of doing as much mental payback to these rat bastard as possible.

If someone has been killed or in the case of pedophiles that sexually abuse a child... mandatory death sentence. These people cannot be healed and cannot function in society. We should not have to bear the expense of keeping these folks alive for life.

The good news here is that the general inmate population have the same morality when it comes to people who hurt children. They don't make it too long in the general prison population. Thank god.
i think they should be hung from the top of the tallest ladder truck buy there groin area so we know where there at at at all times i just got done with a arson case in former fire dept. where i got burned cause the guy lite his house and put gas bombs in all the rooms he ended up getting life with out the chance of parole he was charged with attemped homicde of a public servent i dont think they should ever get out of jail
How about "registered" upon second conviction. It gives some "grace" in deciding the difference between some of the above cases that you mentioned and a true serial arsonist.

As far as DUI drivers being registered....I don't have so much a problem with that either...but all of these types of crimes would only and should only be "registered" after multiple (2) convictions.
The question is: do we want to know if a person with a history of arson lives in our community?
Question #2: If we believe that we violate the taboos by requiring them to "register", then what means do you suggest we use to identify them?
Question #3: Does a community and more intimately the NEIGHBOR have a right to know that the person living next to them is a serial arsonist?
Question #4: What process should be used so when all Hell catches fire, we don't react with an "oops"?

Plus; while we are discussing arsonists, I believe arson is a crime where 100 percent of the sentence must be served. Not day for day or commutation. 100 percent.

TCSS.

Very well put Chief
Yes they should be, and if anyone dies because of the arsonist they should get mandatory life or the death penalty(depending on if the state it happened in allows the death penalty or not.)

or better yet toss em' in the middle of their own fires :)
I don't think false prosecution would be a major problem if done tactfully. You obvioulsy wouldn't want to round up everyone in town and give them the 3rd degree, but if you have a list of known arsonist as well as a detalied report on them and what their fires are/were like, it may make things quicker to finding out who the culprit is. Some people have a "style" of doing things(more so with serial arsonist), this should be documented and the in LE & FFD hands to see if it may be this guy/gal or someone else.

I don't think the general public needs to see a full detailed report on a person however, but they should be able to lookup and see if they have any funny chartacters living next to them. Wether it be for Arson, Child abuse, Felonious Assault, etc. That's something people should be able to check to make sure Charles Manson isn't living/moving next to them.

Be safe!
Yes I think Arsonist should have to register and like Chief maybe not on a public site like sex offenders but local LEO & FD should know they have an arsonist, serial or not living in their jurisdiction.
