CHICAGO - A passenger car has collided with a fire truck in Chicago, sending five firefighters and the car's two occupants to local hospitals.
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said the car's female passenger was "very critically injured" in the accident Saturday, and the driver was in serious condition. He said four firefighters were treated and released Saturday evening, while one was being kept overnight for observation.
Langford said the accident happened just after 5 p.m. on the city's South Side. He said the truck was responding to a call when it was struck by the vehicle.
He said police were investigating the crash but few details were available. None of the victims' names has been released.
Distracted civilian drivers, soundproofed cars and loud stereos all add up to make our responses more dangerous. They can no longer hear us responding, regardless of how much noise we make. Maybe it's time for car manufactures to make a way for a warning to activate inside a vehicle when responding emergency vehicles are near.
Nail was hit right on the head! WAY too many distractions in todays drivers, and their vehicles. While over the years I have noticed the emergency services have done THEIR part, ie more and better driver training, better equipment, slowing & stopping at intersections, etc etc.. it does appear that the crashes are increasing. No doubt this has lead to slower responses, and ultimately the risk to the public goes up, as we are taking longer and longer to respond. I hope all the people involved will be ok. More public educations must be implemented and I think for new drivers, this should be part of their driver training.. more emphasis on responding apparatus.
