I hurt my back opening a very difficult hydrant last week and have had a lot of sciatic nerve pain. I had this same sciatica about 7 years ago from a martial arts injury but it had never bothered me since. It lasted for months the last time, the corporate doctor has me off FF duties for the next week. I know sciatic pain can be chronic so was wondering if any of you have dealt with it and what has worked to relieve it?

Thank you all for the good info. in these replies. Being the street smart FF that I am, I keep my wallet in front pocket.
Since I'm laid up for the week I'd figure I'd do as much research as I can on my own and I always like to hear from others that can relate and don't have anything to gain.
Have you had an X-ray to see if there's an underlying cause? I herniated the disc at L5/S1 back in 2002 while working my other job. I had to have an epidural injection (cortisone), and plenty of physical therapy. My sciatica ran from my lower left lumbar area, down the back of my left leg and calf and caused numbness in my left pinky toe. It eventually went away after the injection and PT, although to this day I am very cognisant of how I lift and move, especially with a heavy patient or action on the fireground.
YES MASTER... Since you took care of my boss, I seem to have a lot of free time on my hands...
So I will be right over... and will bring ______________
Ready to serve you in any way you desire, Master!
And if you like I'll bring you steak and potatoes, and pumpkin pie and that hard liquor that you like so much! I hear it all mixed well with those hard core pain meds being passed around!!! So I will bring my jump kit too.

Promises, promises....Never mind the food just a bottle of single malt scotch, please. I don't have any pain killers so I am self medicating. On your way down swing by Paul's place and kick him in the stones for me.
Thanks!

Last time around which was years ago I tried Chiro and Homeopathic meds with no success. Physical therapy and Vioxx cured me.
The pain is the same though I have not had an x-ray this time. Last time it lasted for months so I'm hoping for ideas as to recover quicker and more importantly keep from re-injury since it seems I am prone to this problem now.
I feel your pain man.I've had lower back problems and neck problems for a while now.Have had luck with chiropracters and physical therapy.Started off with a couple trips to the chiro. the last time along with huge anti-inflmmatories and heat. Then did a shot of PT.The combination of the two worked wonders.I still have to strech almost everyday to stay loose. It does suck to have back problems.
