I hurt my back opening a very difficult hydrant last week and have had a lot of sciatic nerve pain. I had this same sciatica about 7 years ago from a martial arts injury but it had never bothered me since. It lasted for months the last time, the corporate doctor has me off FF duties for the next week. I know sciatic pain can be chronic so was wondering if any of you have dealt with it and what has worked to relieve it?

Look for a newer chiropractor that specializes in applied kineselogy. The old school one's don't do muscle testing and body function work, just crack and pay as Ralph mentions. but most DO have no clue about pinched nerves and most will say you are all fine on an Xray. I have personally had and seen great success with a good, newer generation chiropractor for sciatic pain relief.
After being worked on, I was told, your getting older and you can't jump out of bed and play the fire game like a 20 year old. So I was assigned specific stretches for sciatic pain.
Did you know the most common reason for sciatic pain in men is an oversized wallet and sitting on it makes your pelvis tilt. Find a new pocket.
The stretch is pretty easy, lay on the floor, on your back. Bring LEFT leg up to your chest, left hand on your left knee, pull it into your chest, take your right hand and grab your foot/ankle. Now gently pull your foot toward your right shoulder. (it should rotate your leg a little) You should feel a slight "pull" on your left hip/wallet area, for which is stretching your peraformous muscle. Hold it, take deep breath, then stretch it a bit further. Release slowly.
Repeat on the opposite side. I do this stretch every morning and every night before hitting the rack. Reduced the pinched nerve in the wallet area (sciatic pain) dramatically.
That is all for now from Dr. FETC (seriously but i did stay in a holiday inn express last night bro)
