How do you determine if the scene is safe for you to enter. I was asked to help make contact with a subject that had threatened suicide bc I knew him and LE knew he would not open the door for the officer. I got the subject to open the door and LE went in and made contact, would you consider the scene safe for EMS to enter at this point?
The officer had me stand in the doorway allow other officers in and to keep talking to the subject and the officer stood between me and the subject. After a couple minutes subject got up to get a pop out of the fridge and that is when officer and myself both noticed subject was sitting on a large pair of scissors. Officer unlatched his gun at this point but kept it holstered and had me back off closer to the door and just tried to keep subject calm. Shortly after a deputy arrived and before he made entry I made him aware of the scissors. Deputy tried to get the subjects attention drawn elsewhere in the apartment to get him off the chair he was sitting on so he could retrieve the scissors. After 5 minutes subject got up to show officer a picture while deputy took control of the scissors.
