SCBA Facepiece Cleaning
My department just received 29 MSA Firehawk 7 SCBA's. With this purchase, we are now issuing the masks to qualified members. MSA's documentation recommends their cleaning solution for the masks, but I want to know if anyone here has a good solution. I do know that the solution CANNOT have alcohol in it as that affects the rubber. Has anyone here found something that works?

Good ol'e Sodium hypochlorite and dihydrogen monoxide.
1 part bleach to 10 parts water.

Here's a side note, do NOT use MSA's cleaner solution on Scott facepieces. I found out the hard way it deteriorates the rubber seal of the facepiece.

Warm water. And mild soapy solution. Rinse and air dry.

The best thing I have ever found for removing smoke and soot particles from the facepiece lens is Windex with vinegar. It has to be the vinegar because regular Windex does nothing to it.

We have the MSA Firehawk masks too and have been using the individual commercial mask cleaning wipes named Clean Gear for many years. For heavier cleaning, soap and water should do it.

Each manufacturer tests products that will not harm the components of the face mask. What works well for one may cause damage to another. NIOSH which refers to OSHA for cleaning recommendations has backed off and erred on the side not to protect everyone but in a generic means of cleaning. Fresh Gear cleaner has been approved to meet the requirements of most manufactures. Some specify only their product. In those cases you have to use only the approved.
I have a cleaning program that I have put in place at several departments. It is primarily for departments that share or do not have assigned face mask. If interested in copy let me know.
If you don't want to use the manufacture approved cleaner, FG350 from Georgia Steel and Chemical is the best stuff I have found to do a multitude if thing. Where most manufactures required you to use 2 ounces per gallon of wash solution this is at .5 ounce per gallon. Never use hot water with any germicide for face piece cleaning.
