Radio's can be good/bad on the fireground. When talking on the radio be short and to the point yet detailed. Don't jabber on about this, that, and the other thing. People tend to talk on the radio more than needed. This jams up the radio for people trying to relay vital information such as MAYDAY,patient location/injury, fire suppression teams cordiance w command, directions, ect.
my dept. uses motorola. They seem to work fine for us. The only thing i don't like about our new hiband radios is they don't have good reception in some areas. Although we do have a talk around channel that helps sometimes when we can't get reception on our opperations channel.
Hope i helped you out alil. good luck on your paper.
OUr dept issues motorola HT1250 to all members. Not sure on cost but are very durable. Mine has been submerged in a draft tank and keep right on going. That is all I know about radios is that mine has never failed me yet.
I've had a Motorola MTX8250 the past four years, and I'll put that thing up against a timex watch! It's been in with me on all my fires. It's been through alot, covered during salvage/o-haul, sprayed way more than I'd think it could handle during an attack, dropped in dumptanks/ditches, and even fallen from various heights (on a hose bed being the highest fall). It's ready to rock every time it comes out of the charger.
Bendix King. We started using these radios about 18 years ago because of work with the Forest Service and Wildland calls. They are easily cloned, programed and have not given us any real problems. They are a bit more in price but you get what you pay for. You can buy much cheaper radios bu you will pay more in the long run with maintenance and replacement. We have also had Kenwoods and Maxums. Most agencies in our area use the Kenwoods because thats what the County get for them on grants. IE they cant afford their own radios. The issue here is the radios are cheap.
